What should this
little thing look like?

It's 10cm tall. It sits on your desk. It has a round LCD face, two ears, and an antenna that glows. It knows your routines, your mood, your streaks. It blinks. It waits. It celebrates. This is how we're thinking about its form.
i. Philosophy
What kind of creature is this?
Not a gadget. Not a toy. Something between a plant and a pet — it doesn't demand attention, but you notice when it's gone. It should feel like it belongs on a desk next to a coffee mug and a notebook. Warm materials, rounded edges, a face you want to glance at.
Design principles

1. Approachable, not cute. It's not kawaii. It's not a Funko Pop. Think more Dieter Rams meets Studio Ghibli — simple shapes with warmth. A child should like it. An adult shouldn't feel silly having it on their desk.

2. Small presence, not zero presence. At 10-13cm it's smaller than a coffee mug. It doesn't dominate the desk. But its face catches your eye — the blink, the glow, the ear twitch. It's a peripheral companion, not a central screen.

3. The face IS the robot. The LCD display showing expressions is the most important surface. Everything else — body, ears, antenna — exists to frame and support the face. If you cover the body and only show the face, it should still feel alive.

4. Matte, not glossy. Glossy plastic says "toy" or "gadget." Matte surfaces say "object." Think the texture of a Muji speaker or a ceramic mug. The robot should feel like it was made by someone who cares about materials.

ii. Three directions
Form explorations
Three different approaches to the same brief. Each one prioritizes a different quality: roundness, geometry, or character. The final design might borrow from all three.
Direction A
Pebble
No limbs. No ears. Just a smooth, organic egg shape with a large face and a single antenna. The simplest possible form. All personality comes from the screen. Feels like a river stone that came to life.
Direction B — Recommended
Companion
Small head, small body, bear-like ears, stub arms. Proportioned like a toddler — head bigger than body. The face is the main event. Feels like something that belongs on your desk. Not a robot, not a toy. A companion.
Direction C
Monolith
No limbs, no ears. A minimal vertical form — like a small lantern or speaker. The face is a rectangular window. Below it, a speaker grille. Feels more like a premium desk object than a character. For people who want function, not personality.
iii. Anatomy of the Companion
What each part does and why it's there
Every element serves either a functional purpose (sensor, speaker, display) or an emotional one (makes you smile, makes it feel alive). Nothing is decorative only.
Antenna glow
Status indicator wrapped in personality. Pulses gently when connected. Fast pulse = processing your voice. Off = sleeping. It's the robot's heartbeat — you know it's alive because it breathes.
Ears (servo-driven)
Not decorative. They emote: up when happy, drooped when sad, one tilted when curious, rapid wiggle when excited, flat back when angry. The ears communicate mood when you're too far away to read the face.
Round LCD face
1.69" IPS display (Lite/Plus) or 1.28" round (Pro). The face shows 29 expressions drawn as SVG, rendered as monochrome bitmaps. Eyes have tiny white highlights that make them feel glassy and alive. The smile is slightly asymmetric — perfect symmetry feels mechanical.
Chest LEDs
Three small dots: sage (health), dusk (routines), amber (mood). They map to your life balance. All three lit = you're doing well today. When one dims, that area needs attention. Ambient data at a glance.
Body proportions
Head:body ratio is roughly 60:40. This is deliberate — the same proportion as a baby or a chibi character. It triggers a nurturing instinct. The body is squat and rounded, not tall and mechanical. Arms are stubs, not joints. It doesn't reach. It sits. It's there.
iv. The face language

Each expression maps to a real moment in your day. They're not random emoji — they're the robot's vocabulary for responding to what's happening in your life.

v. A day in the life
What the robot does, hour by hour
The robot isn't always "on." It has rhythms, like a pet. It wakes, reacts, celebrates, rests. Here's what a typical day looks like.
7:00 am
Waking up
Yawns, stretches (ear wiggle). Shows a sleepy face that transitions to happy. Antenna starts pulsing.
8:30 am
Routine reminder
Glances toward you (eyes track). Gently announces "Morning workout?" via TTS. Ears perk up.
9:15 am
Celebrating
You completed the routine. Big smile, ears up, antenna pulses fast. "Nice one!" via TTS. Confetti eyes.
2:00 pm
Focused mode
Narrow eyes, quiet. No sounds, no reminders. Ears slightly forward. Antenna dims. It's working with you.
11:00 pm
Sleeping
Eyes closed, gentle breathing animation. Ears drooped. Occasional zzz. Antenna off. It's done for the day.
vi. Three tiers
Lite, Plus, and Pro
Same personality, three levels of expression. The Lite is a desk pet. The Plus has physical emotion. The Pro is a full companion.
Lite
"The desk pet." USB-powered, no moving parts. All personality comes from the LCD face and the antenna glow. It's the simplest version — but the face alone carries more expression than most smart speakers.

On visual differentiation

The biggest purchase motivator between tiers is the visual difference. Lite is charming — clean monochrome, retro pixel-art feel. Plus adds smooth transitions and particle effects (still monochrome). Pro is a different universe — full-color eyes with gradients, mouth shading, interactive blush (touch head → cheeks gradually redden), seasonal overlays (Santa hat at Christmas, rangoli at Diwali), and mood-adaptive background color that shifts throughout the day.

vii. Materials & finish
What it feels like in your hand
A robot this small lives or dies by its finish. If it feels like cheap plastic, the illusion breaks. It needs to feel like an object someone made with care.
Material direction

Enclosure: PETG or ABS, matte finish. Not glossy — matte absorbs light instead of reflecting it, which makes the LCD face pop as the brightest element. Optional soft-touch coating for a velvety feel.

Color: The base color should be a very dark warm gray (not pure black). Something like #1a2030 — close to the night sky. This matches the LCD bezel so the face feels like a window into the body, not a screen bolted onto a box.

Ears: Same material as body, but slightly lighter shade. This subtle contrast gives them visual separation without being a different color. On Pro, the inner ear has a soft silicone lining (for touch comfort and material contrast).

Antenna tip: Translucent polycarbonate or resin, so the LED inside glows through it like frosted glass. This is the one element that's not matte — it catches light, it feels precious, it's the jewel of the design.

Weight: It should feel heavier than it looks. A small metal weight (or weighted base) gives it gravitas. When you pick it up, it should feel substantial, not hollow. ~65-80g target.
